About Koleinu

Koleinu is a community chorus whose primary goal is to provide its members an opportunity to learn, sing and perform Jewish choral music.

Thursday night weekly rehearsals are engaging, emphasizing the power of musical expression.

In addition to promoting musical and social interactions among its members, Koleinu is interested in serving the broader community by organizing concerts for otherwise underserved populations and by participating in interfaith and multicultural programs. Koleinu is open to adults of all ages, religions and musical backgrounds and does not audition its members.

Koleinu is directed by Carol Marton, known for her work in Jewish choral music in the Boston area. In addition to her work with Koleinu, she is the director of the Adult Choir  at Temple Sinai of Sharon and of Pandora’s Vox, a contemporary women’s vocal ensemble.

Repertoire

Koleinu’s repertoire includes a range of Jewish choral music, including liturgical, secular, contemporary and traditional styles

History

Koleinu has members of all experience levels, from those who have been singing for many years to those who have never been in a group before.

Koleinu was founded in 2002 by Cantor Scott Sokol, Dean of the Jewish Music Institute at Hebrew College, who was hoping to start a Jewish community chorus, and Larry Kozinn, a community member with no formal music training, who was looking for a place to sing Jewish choral music.

Koleinu brings the richness of Jewish music to audiences throughout the greater Boston region through concerts, festivals, interfaith and multicultural programs.

They have performed for more than 1,500 people over their first five seasons at concerts in Newton, Sharon, Wayland and Lexington and joined the Cambridge Symphony Orchestra in that ensemble’s 30th Anniversary Concert in 2005. In July of 2005, Koleinu appeared at the North American Jewish Choral Festival, drawing high praise from attendees impressed by the performance of a group only three years old. As part of their mission to bring music to music to the community, they have performed at Hebrew Senior Life in Roslindale in each of their first five seasons.

Koleinu is affiliated with the Jewish Music Institute of Hebrew College.
